19850416_Bhagavad_Gita_Lecture_Penang_Malaysia Bg 10.11 teṣām evānukampārtham aham ajñāna-jaṁ tamaḥ nāśayāmy ātma-bhāva-stho jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā TRANSLATION: To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance. PURPORT: When Lord Caitanya was in Benares promulgating the chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare, thousands of people were following Him. Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī, a very inﬂuential and learned scholar in Benares at that time, derided Lord Caitanya for being a sentimentalist. Sometimes Māyāvādī philosophers criticize the devotees because they think that most of the devotees are in the darkness of ignorance and are philosophically naive sentimentalists. Actually that is not the fact. There are very, very learned scholars who have put forward the philosophy of devotion. But even if a devotee does not take advantage of their literatures or of his spiritual master, if he is sincere in his devotional service he is helped by Kṛṣṇa Himself within his heart. So the sincere devotee engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness cannot be without knowledge. The only qualiﬁcation is that one carry out devotional service in full Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The Māyāvādī philosophers think that without discriminating one cannot have pure knowledge. For them this answer is given by the Supreme Lord: those who are engaged in pure devotional service, even though they be without sufﬁcient education and even without sufﬁcient knowledge of the Vedic principles, are still helped by the Supreme God, as stated in this verse. The Lord tells Arjuna that basically there is no possibility of understanding the Supreme Truth, the Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, simply by speculating, for the Supreme Truth is so great that it is not possible to understand Him or to achieve Him simply by making a mental effort. Man can go on speculating for several millions of years, and if he is not devoted, if he is not a lover of the Supreme Truth, he will never understand Kṛṣṇa, or the Supreme Truth. Only by devotional service is the Supreme Truth, Kṛṣṇa, pleased, and by His inconceivable energy He can reveal Himself to the heart of the pure devotee. The pure devotee always has Kṛṣṇa within his heart; and with the presence of Kṛṣṇa, who is just like the sun, the darkness of ignorance is at once dissipated. This is the special mercy rendered to the pure devotee by Kṛṣṇa.
Due to the contamination of material association, through many, many millions of births, one’s heart is always covered with the dust of materialism, but when one engages in devotional service and constantly chants Hare Kṛṣṇa, the dust quickly clears, and one is elevated to the platform of pure knowledge. The ultimate goal, Viṣṇu, can be attained only by this chant and by devotional service, and not by mental speculation or argument. The pure devotee does not have to worry about the material necessities of life; he need not be anxious, because when he removes the darkness from his heart, everything is provided automatically by the Supreme Lord, who is pleased by the loving devotional service of the devotee. This is the essence of the teachings of Bhagavad-gītā. By studying Bhagavad-gītā, one can become a soul completely surrendered to the Supreme Lord and engage himself in pure devotional service. As the Lord takes charge, one becomes completely free from all kinds of materialistic endeavors.

This is because the supreme Lord is pleased by the loving devotional service of the devotee. Can I have some hot water please? Not very hot water but something hot water, very warm, slightly hot. This is the essence of the Bhagavat Gita’s teaching. By studying Bhagavat Gita one can become a completely surrendered soul to the supreme Lord and can engage himself in pure devotional service. As the Lord takes charge, one becomes completely free from all kinds of materialistic endeavors. Thus end the purport and translation of text 11, Chapter 10. Here, Krishna explains that he is dwelling in everyone’s heart. But Krishna explains that according to a person’s desire, Krishna reciprocates with them. There are many people who are atheistic, who don’t believe in the presence of God. From them Krishna, He remains invisible, He remains neutral – according to their desire. They say there is no ISvar. No Isvar for them – He is not there. Then there are also the devotees, who are always rendering devotional service to the Lord. So Krishna says, out of compassion for them, He destroys the ignorance with the torch of knowledge. The further we go away from Krishna, the more we become controlled by the material nature. Tik tiki – the lizard confirmed. The lizard. Om tat sat. That control of the material nature is in different modes. Sattva, Raja, tama – goodness, passion and ignorance. Some people they are conditioned to be very clean, to be very learned, to be very kind and gentle. This is their conditioning. This is closest to spiritual mode. They are rare. Then there is the mode of passion. Those people, they are conditioned by doing everything for their personal gain. For their own satisfaction they can do anything. Then there is the mode of ignorance. Mode of ignorance, they don’t know what is to be done and what is not to be done. They become bewildered. Practically mad. And every frustrated with no hope. So these are basically the 3 modes. But you won’t find any mode purely – you’ll always find mixture. Therefore people act out of ignorance and passion. Or passion and ignorance. Sometimes one mode is conquering. Sometimes another mode is conquering. Just like Kamsa. Kamsa was driving the chariot for his sister Devaki at the time of her wedding with Vasudev. It’s a costum that the brother should go with the sister when she is married. So although Kamsa was a very cruel man but he was showing some very good quality. He was driving the chariot for his sister and brother- in-law. So you can say at that time he was showing some mode of goodness. Then davia vani came. It says ‘The son of yours… the 8th son of your sister, Krishna is going to kill you. As soon as he heard that he pulled out his sword to kill his sister. He grabbed the sister by the hair and he was ready to kill her like this. Here you can see how the mode of passion and ignorance. Then he wasn’t thinking that there are thousands of people around and this is his own sister, he wasn’t thinking of anything. He was in ignorance. Like this in different personalities sometimes one or the other quality mode takes prominence. The goal of life is to transcend the modes. The animals, they are totally in mode of ignorance. The story about one jackal fell into one pot of blue colour and so he became blue clour. When he went into the jungle all the animals thought “What is this? We’ve never seen this. This is a very unusual thing.” Even the lion, he never saw a blue animal. So he thought that… The jackal was very smart. He said, “I’m the king of the jungle.” So even lion said, “Well blue animal… he must be king. I’ve never seen.” So all of the animals, they were serving this blue jackal – even the lion. But one night a jackal started to howl in the distance. So although he was… you know when one jackal cries out all of them want to cry. Although he was sitting on his thrown as the king of the jungle. He also started to howl. He couldn’t control himself with the nature of the jackal. As soon as the lion saw that he is crying like a jackal he said, “Ah, this rascal is a jackal.” So immediately jumped and killed him. Animals they follow by the dictation of the senses. Even if you put a dog on a thrown, you through a bone, he will run. Human being is meant for sense control. To raise above this… above this animal nature. Then human being can be happy. Then human being can achieve perfection. Normally we are dependent on so many material things. Just to be happy … we are dependent to… to get mental peace, we are dependent on so many things. But if we build our spiritual knowledge, if we build up our spiritual strength, we can transcend this dependence. This is the actual purpose of human life. The more control which one has, the more transcendental knowledge which one has that puts one in a higher level. But this material world is known as Maya. Maya means that which is not. That means that person who more in ignorance, he things he is more enlightened. That person who is more in bondage, he things he is free. Just like someone who is intoxicated. He thinks that he… he is totally in control of his situation. But actually his totally in illusion. He is not able to see things as they are but he thinks that he sees everything perfect. Sometimes people, they become very proud in having some big position. This can also bewilder. This way the material nature makes us think, even though we are in bondage, it makes us think we are free. Bhagavat Gita says that everyone who is born must die. Everyone who dies must again be born. There are many things in this world which are not for sure. But there is one thing that is 100% sure. It’s sure that everyone who is born, 100% sure they are going to die. No lottery ticket. 100%. And when one dies, one is also sure again he will be born. What is going to be the next birth? What was the previous birth? It is an interesting discussion. As a human being, we are able to… by our actions we can create what is the next birth. By our actions we can be freed from the bad influences of our previous births. Specifically by rendering devotional service to Krishna we can transcend this repetition of birth and death. We can transcend these 3 modes of material nature. This is actual fact. But people are in ignorance. They are in Maya. They are in illusion. One time Narada Muni asked the great kind Yudhisthira Maharaj, “What is the most amazing thing? You are emperor of the entire world. You have seen so many wonderful things. What is the most amazing this you have seen?” Yudhistra Maharaja said, “The most amazing thing that I’ve seen is that every man – he has seen that his grandfather, great grandfather is dead, he saw that his grandfather is dead, he is seeing his father died. Yet he will think that he won’t die. This I find the most amazing. So this is … of course can be understood in a philosophical way. Because that we are eternal by nature we actually never die. We put on new body and take off old bodies just like you put on new clothes and take off old clothes. This way it’s unnatural for us to think about death. Because we are eternal by nature. But Maya keeps us in illusion so we do not prepare to achieve our real eternal position. So all of you are very fortunate. You all have taken human birth. As a human being we have the potential to achieve complete perfection. You can achieve the highest position that a human being can achieve. You can achieve complete liberation from this material repetition of birth and death. You can realise your eternal relationship with Krishna the Supreme Person. Plus you can be completely free from all types of mental and physical suffering. Each one of you has that capacity. But normally in material life we are preoccupied with serving our senses, like the animals. We are trying to serve the senses. While trying to serve the senses we are drained [26.00] in so many places. Sometimes we are brought up sometimes we are brought down. So now of course, you are here in this rehabilitation center. Here your activities are to some extend restricted. You can’t do everything that you would like to do. So naturally you might feel some inconvenience for that. You can looking forward to when you can again be all in the society. But actually this is also a very good opportunity for you. When one is out in the active world then there are so many distractions. It is very hard for the mind to any steadiness. Even though there is suffering one is always thinking that there is happiness is waiting down the road. So this way, one isn’t able to see things as they are. So now all you are here, you could take advantage of this time by building up your spiritual strength. Jagannath Balabdha – Mr. Jagannthan is a Pandit of Bhagavat Gita and he can give some spiritual advices to you. And you can chant this Hare Krishna Mantra. This will help you bring you above the modes of nature. And thus you can actually achieve real independence from this material needs. If you act in the mode of goodness atleast, then you will be able to see things more clearly. And for this… by chanting Hare Krishna one is brought to the platform of pure goodness. There is no hard and fast rules for chanting Hare Krishna. Actually when Lord Caitanya would chant he would sometimes dance in ecstasy. Sometimes he would be showing so many ecstatic symptoms. Sometimes laughing loud, sometimes fainting, sometimes hair standing on end, sometimes eyes filling with tears, or voice chocking with love. One great Sankaracharya that, “Why you are sannyasi and doing all these things – chanting and dancing, acting like a mad man?” Lord Caitanya explained that His Guru had told him that in this age we should chant the name of Krishna. So He was chanting, following the order of His Guru. And He said He also went to his Guru and said, “What is this? I’m chanting this mantra but I don’t know what happened sometimes I’m laughing, sometimes I’m crying. Have I gone mad? What is this?” The Guru said, “No, this is good sign. The symptom of love for God- Krishna Prema. So this is alright. Continue chanting.” Lord Caitanya requested all of His followers to encourage everyone to chant. He also convinced that Shankaracarya to chant and he became His disciple. So this process, this can be performed by anyone. And by performing, one can come up to the… gradually come up to the pure stage of consciousness. How many of you would like to come out to the joyful transcendental state of consciousness? How many of you would like to transcend the modes of ignorance and passion? Lord Caitanya He would give this chanting to everyone, no matter what caste, whether they are rich or poor. He was liberal. He said this is spiritual – it’s for everyone. How many of you like this mercy of Lord Caitanya? So Lord Caitanya requested followers to ask everyone to try practicing this chanting. So you are all here. So, here or anywhere, I ask everyone to try this chanting process. Last night in the Krishna Mandir in Penang I asked and several hundred people agreed that they will chant. Because everyone in this world is confined – by birth, by death, by old age, by disease. Real freedom can be achieved by chanting. So, similarly I’m requesting all of you that kindly you all try this process of chanting Hare Krishna-even for a few minutes everyday. We ask that atleast 108 times everyone should chant if not more. How many of you like to chant? It’s totally voluntary. So those of you who all like to chant… you don’t have in Malayalam – tamil? We give out all these cards to those who like.
