Sankirtan Yagna

Srila Prabhupad Bhaktivedanta Memorial Hall ki jai!

We are very happy to declare open the Bhaktivedanta Memorial Hall, Samskara Hall, for the purpose of performing Vedic samskaras, paathas, pravachans, and ceremonies. (It is) a new asset to this temple so that the devotees can have regular programs and functions here, central airconditioning (devotees laugh) even in the summer; it may not be needed in the winter. So hope you all put it to good use.

Want to thank all the donors and all the devotees who worked so hard to bring this project together before the Janamashtami festival which is tomorrow.

Then it will be open for the people visiting here to come and get some mercy.

Conversation :

Gurudev : Mercy!

Devotees : Hari bol!

Gurudev continues His speech :

Today we are reading the Srimad Bhagavatam. First, I'll offer my prayers to the guru parampara.

Srimad Bhagavatam in the Matter of the story of King Vena, the 4th Canto 14th Chapter, 12th verse, spoken at the Bhaktivedanta Samskara Hall in Iskcon Hyderabad , Nampally Station Road, Radha Madanmohanji Temple, on the eve of Janamasthami, spoken on this auspicious day, 23rd of August, 2008 in the 522nd year or our beloved Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, to the west of the Ganges, west of the Godavari river; Hari hi Om Tat sat! tad-vidvadbhir asad-vṛtto  veno’smābhiḥ kṛto nṛpaḥ sāntvito yadi no vācaṁ  na grahīṣyaty adharma-kṛt loka-dhikkāra-sandagdhaṁ  dahiṣyāmaḥ sva-tejasā

The saintly sages continued thinking: Of course, we were completely aware of his mischievous nature, yet we nevertheless enthroned Vena. If we cannot persuade King Vena to accept our advice, he will be condemned by the public, and we will join them. Thus by our prowess we shall burn him to ashes.

Purport by His Divine Grace Abhay Charan Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada ki jai!

Saintly persons are not interested in political matters, yet they are always thinking of the welfare of the people in general. Consequently they sometimes have to come down to the political field and take steps to correct the misguided government or royalty. However, in Kali-yuga, saintly persons are not as powerful as they previously were. They used to be able to burn any sinful man to ashes by virtue of their spiritual prowess. Now saintly persons have no such power due to the influence of the age of Kali. Indeed, the brahmanas do not even have the power to perform sacrifices in which animals are put into a fire to attain a new life. Under these circumstances, instead of actively taking part in politics, saintly persons should engage in chanting the mahä-mantra. Hare Krishna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare! By the grace of Lord Caitanya, by simply chanting this Hare Krishnaa mahä-mantra, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krsna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare, the general populace can derive all benefits without political implications.

Thus ends the Bhaktivedanta Swami translation and purport of the Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapurana 4th Canto, 14th Chapter, 12th in the matter of the Story of King Vena. Spoken today, 23rd August 2008, at the Radha Krishna Madanmohan Temple, Namapally Station Road, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, Bharat Loka in the universe of the four-headed Brahma!(devotees laugh)

Text 13 has no purport.

evam adhyavaasayainam munayo guudha-manyavah upavrajyaabruvan venam shaantvayitvaa ca saamabhih

Translation The great sages, having thus decided, approached King Vena. Concealing their real anger, they pacified him with sweet words and then spoke as follows.

Here the great king Vena was a tyrant; he didn't follow the Kshatriya concept of protecting the citizens, he was causing a lot of difficulties, misusing his power. So first the saintly people thought, “Let us convince him to act properly, and if we can`t do that, then with our mystical power, we will burn him to ashes.”

Prabhupada explains now previously the sages had so much power, they could correct the things in the material world when needed, to make everything work nicely.

But now, they are prohibited from doing any of these sacrifices and they are not able to do it effectively.

So what they can do is, they can purify the world by chanting the Hare Krishna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare mantra.

This brings peaceful, loving, atmosphere into the world. It is recommended that we can chant the Holy Names.

When we observe the Janamashtami, one of the things we do is we chant.

Just like if we go to the Balaji Temple, in Tirumala, when everyone goes before Srinivasa, then they chant...

Call-and-response : Gurudev : Govinda! Devotees : Govinda! Gurudev : Govinda! Devotees : Govinda! Gurudev : Govinda! Gurudev : Govinda!

Gurudev continues His speech : Go means the land, the cows, the senses, one who gives happiness to the whole country, to the land, to the farmers, to the cows and to the senses; He is known as Govinda.

Call-and-response:

Gurudev : Govinda!

Devotees : Govinda!

Whether you chant Govinda or Hare Krsna, no difference. You should chant the Holy Names of the Lord.Especially in Kali Yuga, it's recommended we chant the Maha Mantra:Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare Iti sodasakam nam nam kali kalmasha nashanam Natah parataropaya sarva vedeshu drshyate

Kali Santarana Upanishad says we chant these 16 names Sodasakam naam naam, kali kalmasha nashanam

All the evil effects of the Kali yuga – the inequalities, the suffering, the hatred, the prejudice, the terrorism – all these things are destroyed.

Whatever the problems are in Kali yuga. Are there any problems in Kali Yuga?(devotees laugh) You find any today – any problems? No problems! (devotees laugh) Newspapers, television, do they have any problems to report?

Primarily problems!

But here, this is the solution : having this Janamashtami festival, chanting the Holy Names of Hare Krishna, this can gradually remove the problems of the society. So all of you can help purify the society by chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

Someone may say, but there are other ways! But this verse says natah parataropaya, sarva vedeshu drshyate.

In the Vedas, you won’t find any better way than chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

See there is a beautiful picture in the back, Lord Caitanya is dancing with the tigers and the deer and the boars, and so many jungle animals. Because, when Lord Caitanya sings Hare Krishna, even the wild animals lose their hatred, lose their anger, and they become loving.

The tiger and the deer are dancing together, kissing each other! I love you, my dear tiger! (devotees laugh) I love you, my dear deer! (devotees laugh)

No fear!

So Prabhupada said that Lord Caitanya could get the animals in the jungle to dance and love each other. We may not have that capacity; at least if we can make the human beings sing and dance and love each other, chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, that will fulfill Lord Caitanya’s mission. So this is the mandate - get everyone to chant Hare Krishna, love Krishna and love each other and the whole world will be a peaceful place, a loving place, a beautiful place!

Now people are putting bombs on their bodies and going into some big assembly of people and blowing themselves up so that they can blow up many other people!

What is the sense of that?

Better to dedicate yourself to the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bhagavan Sri Krishna, chant His Holy Names and give everyone a love bomb!(devotees laugh)

No destructive bomb!

Explosion of love by chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!

So somehow, in the previous yuga, King Vena, thought he was God.He was so crazy.

Sometimes in Kali yuga, we have people like that. They say I am God, worship me. (devotees laugh)

I am Bhagavan, give me a few lakhs of rupees donation, I will give you a big ashirwaad. (devotees laugh)

Not so cheap, you see; not anybody can be Bhagavan.Bhagavan is Bhagavan! And you don’t have to pay Him!He can give you the blessing. So this problem is there. Some people are claiming to be God.Now there is nobody to take any action against them. But at the time of Vena, when he was claiming to be a Bhagavan, that he is the king and everyone should worship him, then the sages said first let us try to win him over.

If that doesn’t work, we will take some more serious steps.

People, if they know what the Bhagavad Gita says, what the Srimad Bhagavatam says, then they will be protected from being misled by false spiritual masters, false gurus, false avatars.

So that is why, in Telugu, in Hindi, in English, in different languages, we have the Srimad Bhagavatam Grantharaj – the Bhagavat Purana – translated so that everybody can know what is the purpose of life, what is the real personality of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In Bhagavad Gita Krishna says, sambhavaami yuge yuge – every yuga He comes.

In the Kali yuga, He comes in disguise. In the 12th canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam, it says:

Krishna varnam tvisha Krishnam Sangopangastra paarshadam Yajnair sankirtana prayair Yajanti hi sumedasah

That Krishna comes in a non-Krishna non-blackish colour – all the colours are taken, only the golden colour is left.So He comes in a golden colour, with His eternal associates, expansions and His spiritual weapons of love.

Like this mridanga, what sound does it make?(Some devotee plays the mridanga.) The kartals (Some devotee plays the kartals.)

So these are the love weapons!

We chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

These cymbals and drums, they awaken the love in our hearts, while chanting the Holy Names.

Lord Caitanya came to establish the Sankirtan Yajna.

This sankirtan yajna means sacrifice of the chanting of the Holy Names together.

We chant one by one, which is good for ourselves but when we chant together it has more collective help for the whole society, chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

So Krishna says I come in every yuga so this Kali yuga is meant for Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki Jai!

But now we have got people in every century claiming to be God! Every year they are coming, every month, every week, every day!(devotees laugh) Some new bhagavan is coming! (devotees laugh) But they can’t even bring the rain, they want to make irrigation project! (devotees laugh) So Bhagavan is Bhagavan – nobody can become Bhagavan! And He comes only when He is predicted.People may be sadhus, but being a sadhu is not the same.In Kali yuga, sadhus are not so powerful. In the previous yugas, sadhus could do so much.(In) ashwamedha yajna, they could offer an old horse in the fire and bring out a new horse from the fire. This ashwamedha and gomedha are forbidden in Kali yuga. Also sanyas is forbidden.

Some take karma sanyas giving up all work and living in a jungle which is very difficult in Kali yuga to follow.Even if somebody takes sannyas, they live in an ashram and do some public work to uplift the people, help the people. In our Krishna consciousness movement, we have got millions of followers but we have only hundred sanyasis.

They are not giving up work, they are doing so much service.

We also have many grihasthas and they are also doing so much service.

Here our temple president of the temple in Hyderabad, Vedanta Caitanya das, is a grihastha.Lord Caitanya said, “grihe thaako bone thaako sada Hari bole dako” “Whether you are a grihastha or a brahmachari or from a renounced order, everyone should chant the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra.” Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

And they should do service to Krishna. So we need some brahminical minded grihasthas also to do some seva to help the society to be more spiritualized.

Few may do like a full time activities like Vedanta Caitanya das or you may work outside, maintain your family, but do Bhakti Vriksha, do some house programs. That has also a good effect – people see that like me he is married, he is working but he is peaceful and happy. He is chanting the Holy Names of Krishna, so why don’t we also chant, husband and wife together?

How many ladies who are married want their husbands to be chanting with them and those who are unmarried, when they get married want devotee husbands?

Please raise your hands!

Both together!

How to have a peaceful house, a Krishna conscious house, a peaceful society, a peaceful world, when people are oriented to pleasing God. In the modern society people don’t even know the difference between the body and the atma.

From the Vedas we know that the body dies; atma is nitya, it is eternal – sanatana. So when the body dies the atma goes out and takes a rebirth.

So do we want to take rebirth as an animal? As a human? As a deva?

Or do you want to go straight back to God, to Krishna? These are your options more or less. There was a scientist, psychologist who took somebody backed by hypnotism.

He said what is your sammohan?

What is your previous life?

And normally in the previous life also people are human.

But this person said, “I am a butterfly.” (devotees laugh) So how is it? From human to butterfly to human so what happened? There was a very tall building with a big dome and I flew in through the door and there were some statues there standing, someone playing a flute! And there were some fruits and being a butterfly I like fruits – that is my main diet! So I landed on the tray and I was eating the fruit. Then some man came out shouting and POW!!!(Gurudev make a hitting noise) He killed me!

So that psychologist, the psychiatrist, when he heard this he said, what is this?

He must have gone to some Krishna temple and the pujari seeing the insect on the prasadam went pow and smashed him!But by taking prasadam he went all the way and reincarnated from an insect to a human being. Then he came to the temple and he became a devotee.

Devotees respond :Hari bol!

He still kept his word, but he became a full believer in Krishna.

That if you can go from insect to human being eating Krishna Prasad, then we know how powerful is Krishna!

So you know one of the austerities you must perform tomorrow after fasting, for those who are fasting, have to do a break fast. And you have to eat prasadam. Are you prepared to take this austerity? Devotees : Hari bol!

By taking prasadam you will also be elevated.

So we chant Hare Krishna, we eat Krishna prasadam, we dance, we hear and read some Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad Gita.

What is difficult in this process?

Anything difficult? And when you do some cleaning, when you clean the temple, you clean your heart.

How many of you have ever cleaned the temple or cleaned the hall? Wow! See, all their hearts are clean!

I hope you didn’t put any more dirt into it after cleaning!(devotees laugh) So, your son is also going to take prasadam? So today we are having a special ceremony in this hall.

This is the Bhaktivedanta Swami Samskara, Vedic Samskara Hall.So we are going to perform various samskaras here today. We performed, so far, arati, pooja, sankirtanam, and now anna praashanam. Vedanta Caitanya’s and Revati’s son is in the sixth month, recommended to break grains and we do that.

In the meantime, any question?

Gurudev reads a written question: Hare Krishna Maharaj, we are thankful to you for making your presence.

Gurudev responds : I didn’t make my presence!!Krishna made my presence!I only made my appearance here!

(Gurudev continues reading the question) Your presence itself makes us feel so much happy. For us you travelled and made your presence here.We are thankful to you. Before asking some question I pray to you and seek blessings that I can ask you questions in a submissive way.

Subb – subbmissive! (Gurudev points out the mis-spelling of the wore submissive)

Another respons from Gurudev : You have a very good sense of humor!

No. 1 question (Gurudev continues reading): Can you please tell me what homework one should do to get desire to please Krishna?

Gurudev answers: In the Caitanya Caritamrta, Lord Caitanya explained Krishna prema nitya siddha sadhu kabu noi, shravan aadi shuddha citthe, koro ei udoy

Understand?

Need a translation. Krishna prema is within our heart, we do not have to do something to learn it.

It is there naturally.

Simply with a pure mind if we do some shravan aadi, shuddha cittha koro ei udoy shravan means hearing, and shravan, kirtan, the nine practices of bhakti yoga.

If you perform that with a simple heart you will awaken up naturally that loving desire.

What is love? You want a desire to please Krishna. What is love?

Business means I want you to give me something - money may be, that is business.

But love means I want to give you, right?

Somebody loves somebody and so they want to serve them, they want please them, they want to give them something.

So what you want is love.

Love for Krishna.

That is already in your heart, but it's lying dormant; but if you hear the message about Krishna, if you chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, that love will awaken.

We want to serve Krishna.

Question No. 2: Since day after tomorrow is Srila Prabhupad’s appearance day and I am very curious as to how many foreign devotees and even Indians dedicated their lives for Prabhupad to for fulfilling his mission? If you desire so, can you please tell me what made you feel sheltered in Srila Prabhupada’s presence?

GM: How many devotees took shelter all over the world?

We have over 500 branches, over 5000 bhakti vrikshas and naama hattas and counselor groups. We have got so many books – millions and millions of books that have been distributed. So there must be millions of people who have dedicated themselves and taken shelter in Prabhupad’s teachings.

As far as, when I was in Prabhupad’s physical, direct spiritual presence, I felt so much sheltered, because he was so caring and loving and selflessly giving Krishna to everyone we could see and feel that he was the happiest person – happiest person in the whole world. Not happy, like in Bangalore; there was a sign : Come to the Central Mall, 60% discount - Happiness Festival!(devotees laugh) So if you get 60% off, will you be happy?(devotees laugh)

You can get your shirt for 60% off, that will fully satisfy you?

Even if you get a free shirt I think you may not be permanently happy!(devotees laugh) How long will that shirt last?So this is not the time of superficial happiness.

This is very deep – if you look close sometimes you see Prabhupad looks a bit grave; if you look a little closer at his eyes, you may pick out there’s tears in his eyes!Tears of love – that he is in ecstasy, that he is covering his ecstasy, he is so profound and so deep! This are little waves on the top of the ocean, but when the tsunami comes, it goes the whole depth of the ocean and it goes and it floods.

Call-and-response: Gurudev : Gauranga! Devotees : Gauranga! Gurudev : Nityananda! Devotees : Nityananda! Gurudev : Gauranga! Devotees : Nityananda Gurudev : Govinda! Devotees :Govinda! Gurudev : Govinda! Devotees :Govinda! Gurudev : Govinda! Devotees :Govinda!

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!(Gurudev leads and devotees chant).

So, they had me give a lecture in Berlin, Germany. And I talked about Krishna consciousness as the art of being happy.

There are many ‘arts’ going around now!(devotees laugh) This is the art of being eternally, spiritually, fully happy and blissful.

The system you see annapraashan is there are the five praanas.

Gurudev reads : Praanaaya, Aapanaaya, Samaanaaya, Udaanaaya and Vyanaaya. So we are feeding the Lords. We're feeding the fire of digestion and the praanaas and the Lord of the praanas.

Lord for Praanaaya is Achyuta. Lord for Aapanaya is Janardhana. Lord for Samanaya prana is Lakshmi Narayana. Lord for Udaanaaya is Yajna. Lord for Vyaanaaya prana is Janardhana.

There are different prayers.

These prayers are to give blessing to the child.

Like the first prayer is:

O Achyuta, Master of food, bestow food which gives strength and which is free from disease.

You should be the performer of sacrifices onwards, give strength to us and the animals, I sacrifice to the Praana. O Janaradhana, Lord of sustenance and food, provide us sustenance and bestow us food of bliss and immortality and at all times bestow upon us both human and beast.

O Lakshmi Narayana, rulers of sustenance, give us the food of immortality prepared by Lakshmi Herself.

Call-and-response :

Gurudev : Lakshmidevi ki!

Devotees : Jai!

Gurudev continues reading: Bestow upon us Your remnants to the humans and animals.

O Lord of the sustenance, give us your principal sacrifice, the food of that sacrifice.Bestow to us the human form and nature so hard to attain, made eternal.

O Janardhana, give to us both man and beast Your eternal food, that which has been offered to You sought with the nectar of the six flavours and capable of destroying all the sins.

This is a translation of the five mantras to feed the five praanaas.(Guru maharaj then recites the mantras in Sanskrit)The annapraashana ceremony is then conducted.

Gurudev : Let there be light chanting in the background... soft, softly..(Gurudev wants the kirtan to be soft)

Now with your friends, you can sit the baby down and he can choose money or books!

See which way he goes! That shows what his tendency was in his previous life. One time I saw a baby take the money and put it on the books!(devotees laugh)He was a sankirtan devotee! Hari bol!
